The smaller groups in our church community are inside our homes where we go deeper,
build friendships, and walk out the Christian life with each other.
HOME CHURCH/SMALL GROUP/CLASS GUIDE
1. “Breaking the Ice” question: (group facilitator)
2. Check-ins: What’s been happening in your week(s) since last meeting? Introduce yourself if new/new
people in group, check in with each other
3. Care: Needs in the group; name needs and have sentence prayers (short sentences/open ended, not
long-winded) at end of the gathering time
4. Compassion: What compassion work is the group planning? Are you inviting your neighbors to join?
5. Group Announcements (church-wide and group-only)
6. Dig in: Any reflections, discernments, disagreements from last week’s teaching (or since you last
met)? Look at the Bible passage(s) again and read some of them out loud in the group (and other verses
that may have been mentioned). What jumps out at you? Discuss some of the questions as a group.
7. End and Homework: Final questions, prayer huddles for personal requests. Consider breaking into
small groups (huddles) of 2-4, by gender, if large enough.
1. BIG IDEA: SHIFTING THE CULTURE
Key verse: Gal 3. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is
there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
2. REVIEW
OUR MISSION: Jesus’ Great Commandment and Great Commission
DISCUSSION:
1. Think of the family/home you grew up in. What would say were your family’s values?
2. If you were to list values for your life what values would make the list? Where does it
overlap and/or go away from your childhood family?
3. When you think of a culture in our church, how would describe it?
4. Sam Chand quotes a pharmaceutical executive Dick Clark as saying: “The fact is, culture
eats strategy for lunch. You can have a good strategy in place, but if you don’t have the
culture and the enabling systems, the [negative] culture of the organization will defeat
the strategy.” Chand explains, “If you were to receive a kidney as a transplant, but your
body is unhealthy, it will reject the kidney. That is why churches need to become highly
intentional about creating a sustainable healthy culture; it is the soul of the organization.”
Reflect on this outloud.
+ Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart
and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law
and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
+ Matthew 28:19-20 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age.”
5. If we did not name a mission, vision and values, what do you think are the assumed ones
and real ones(health or unhealthy) of our church?
+ Great Commission | Great Commandment
6. Which values that Pilgrim Church has named speak to you and why?
OUR VISION: We exist to love our city and to invite our neighbours to flourish by
rooting our lives in the outrageous love and life of Jesus.
Jeremiah 29:7, 1 John 4:7-8, Ephesians 3:17, Col 1:17, Col. 1:28-29, John 13:3435, John 3:16-17
7. How do you think we should resolve conflicts between values?
8. What values in your life need to change to help you do the mission and vision God has
given you?

4. SUMMARY AND TAKE OUTS
+ Jesus was incredibly focused on his mission! Starts his ministry with Isaiah 61, in Luke 4.17the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. Unrolling
it, He found the place where it was written: 18“The Spirit of the Lord is on Me,
because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to
proclaim deliverance to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release
the oppressed, 19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
3. MAIN POINTS:
1 Understanding Church Culture
+ A church’s culture is the atmosphere in which the church functions
+ “Culture is the most crucial component of the church. If a good steak is the vision, then the plate on which it is served is the culture. If the plate is dirty then the
steak (vision) is devalued.
